The School Nurse should be notified of all students’ medical conditions in order to better assist them.  This is especially important when a student suffers from seizures. Please complete a Health Inventory for each student.

It is often difficult for parents to know whether their children are too sick to attend class. Here are some general guidelines.

To ensure the health and safety of all students, any student who exhibits:  Vomiting, continuous diarrhea or fever >100.0 F the morning of or the night before school, must be excluded from school. 

Students may return to school as follows:

• Free of fever (<100.0F) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin).

• Food and liquids have been tolerated for at least 24 hours without vomiting and/or diarrhea, and without the use of medication to relieve symptoms.

• Students diagnosed with a contagious illness that is being treated with prescription medication, must complete a minimum of 24 hours of the prescribed medication dosage prior to returning to school. Please contact the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed with a contagious condition such as strep throat, chickenpox, pink eye, impetigo, ringworm, flu, or has vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Prescription medication:

• Medication must be brought in to school by an adult. 
• It must be prescribed and the pharmacy label either on the box or the medication itself.
• Physician’s request for medication form and parent permission must be filled out by the physician and parent in order for the nurse to administer the medication. 

Over the counter medication:

•  Medication must be in an original sealed container with expiration date clearly indicated. 
• Expired medication may not be given to students.
• Staff must follow the manufacturer’s instructions printed on the container. (This includes the age of child, the dose for age of child, indications for use, length of time to administer before seeking advice of physician.)
• All medication to be administered during school hours shall be delivered to the clinic by the parent or a responsible adult.                                                                                                       

Students shall not carry medication on the school bus and shall not deliver medication to the clinic. It is the responsibility of the parent to see that the medication is delivered to and picked up from the school by a responsible adult at the end of the day or the week, as appropriate. The district’s policy is available for review in the student handbook.

Students are not allowed to carry any medication with them at school.

Asthma / Allergy Information

Asthma is a chronic lung disorder that causes airways (the tubes that carry air into and out of the lungs) to become inflamed, which means that they swell and produce lots of thick mucus. The muscles surrounding the airways also tend to tighten, which makes the already clogged airways even narrower. This results in asthma symptoms, which can include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Diabetes is a disease where your sugar levels in your blood are higher than the normal values. If your child has diabetes please inform the school nurse as soon as possible. 

Diabetes Management Plan

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can cause changes in your behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness. It is extremely important to notify the nurse and school officials if your child is diagnosed with seizures. The school will immediately develop a plan of action to assist students should a seizure occur. A Seizure Action Plan should be completed by a physician.

A student must be fully immunized against certain diseases or must present a certificate or statement that, for medical reasons or reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, the student will not be immunized. No student may be enrolled in any school in Galena Park ISD unless they have been vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; measles, mumps, and rubella; polio; hepatitis A; hepatitis B; varicella (chicken pox); and meningococcal disease (based on age). Wellness Plan

The campus wellness plan is developed by a committee which includes the school nurse, a physical education coach, a cafeteria manager, a school counselor, a Communities in Schools Coordinator and a parent volunteer in the community.
